Flake vs. Quartz Epoxy Flooring: Which Is Right for Your Space?

Flake versus quartz epoxy flooring, a ProResin Flooring guide.

Flake and quartz are the two broadcast epoxy systems we install. Both start the same way: a prepared slab, a base coat, and a material scattered into it while it is wet. What gets scattered, and how the floor is finished, is where they part ways.

What a flake floor is

Decorative vinyl flakes are broadcast over a pigmented base coat and sealed under a clear topcoat. The flakes come in many color blends, so the floor can be matched to walls, cabinets or a vehicle. The speckled pattern is forgiving: it helps hide dust, tire marks and small imperfections in the concrete, and the flake adds a light texture underfoot.

Where it fits best: garages, basements, home gyms, shops and showrooms.

What a quartz floor is

Colored quartz granules are broadcast into the coating and locked in with clear topcoats. Quartz is a hard mineral, so the finished floor is dense and textured, and it stands up well to heavy foot traffic and frequent washing. The look is tighter and more uniform than flake.

Where it fits best: commercial and industrial spaces, and areas that get wet or are cleaned often.

How they compare

  • Look: flake is larger and more decorative; quartz is finer and more uniform.
  • Texture: both add texture, and quartz is the more aggressive of the two. The amount of grip can be adjusted with the topcoat.
  • Cleaning: both are sealed, easy-to-clean surfaces. A smoother finish mops faster; a more textured finish gives more traction.
  • Typical use: flake is the popular choice for homes; quartz is more common where the floor works for a living.

How to choose

Start with how the space is used. If it is a garage or basement and appearance matters as much as durability, flake is usually the right call. If the floor will see constant traffic, water or regular wash-downs, quartz is worth a look. Either way, the result depends on the concrete preparation underneath it.
